A painting of the old bridge at Grampound. It is to be assumed that the ruins in the centre foreground are those of the old bridge that was replaced in 1834. The structure in the background is probably the bridge that stood from 1834 until the late 1960s when the present (2008) bridge was built. The 1762 -1834 bridge stood slightly downstream of its two successors. The main road to Truro was then 'Old Hill', rising steeply out of the valley and passing the Roman fort of Carvossa. The school stands on the line of the old road on the Creed side of the River Fal and the line of cottages set back from the main road close to the entrance to the Village Hall shows its route as it approached the bridge. There are three date stones set into the masonry of the present bridge on the upstream side - 1762, 1834 and 1969. The original framed painting bears the inscription 'presented by H E Julyan'.
